Hostels the Good and the Bad!

While traveling throughout Europe you will encounter a wide arange of different types of hostels. Some are very nice, and some you feel like you will contract a disease if you sleep in the beds. I recomend that you research where you are going to stay before you book something. Using websites like http://hostelworld.com/ is a good way to get started in your search for a hostel. At this website you can search location of hostels and the quality of where you are going to stay. You are able to view reviews and read comments from those who have stayed there previously. Although for the most part these reviews are very realistic, you can't always believe what you read. My first hostel experience was probably the worst one I had, because we were inexperienced in searching for good ones. We were in a co-ed room with bunkbeds that were placed very close to one another. A wide arrangement of people were staying here from children to creepy old men. As far as sanitation there was none. I litereally slept clinging to my backpack afraid that someone might steal it. Although we did not sleep much this night it was an experience I will never forget. I have stayed in many hostels while studying abroad, and this is the only one I have complaints about. When I went on spring break all I stayed in was hostels. It is cool because you get to meet so many different people. In Barcelona we met people from the states and basically spent our whole time together. In Dublin we met two girls who were studying in France as well, and then later ended up staying in the same hostel as them in Amsterdam. In addition, we were traveling during easter and met people from Australia and we ended up cooking a sort of easter dinner in our hostel kitchen (which most have). Although at times you may feel out of your comfort zone, staying in hostels is one of the most fun things I have done while here. It is a great way to meet new people especially if traveling alone. List of things to bring if planning on staying in a hostel: lock to secure things, towel (not every hostel provides them), the least amount of valuables as possible, shower shoes, and a positive attitude. Also being modest is something you will learn to kick out the window real quick. You may be sleeping in a room with the opposite sex, sharing bathrooms, etc. The more money you pay the more conviniences you will have, but it is almost more fun to rough it a bit and a lot cheaper.

Places to stay: Neptune's Hostel in Killarney Ireland, http://www.neptuneshostel.com/ one of the nicest we stayed in and cheap! In Barcelona, Hostel One, also a very nice hostel, the owners are really nice!
